EXPANDED PTFE AND PTFE APPLICATIONS IN THE PHARMACEUTICAL FIELD |
Seals are a headache in the pharmaceutical industry. On the one hand, the sealing material must be able to adapt to the production process conditions. Because of the high temperature and pressure of the production operation, the cleaning medium and disinfectant have certain corrosion, so the material itself is not too much to choose at the beginning. On the other hand, elastic materials more or less always with toxicity, it and the production medium contact and influence each other, resulting in the risk of impurities is also there.
Even if the correct sealing material is found, it still needs to be installed according to the pharmaceutical process to make it meet the requirements of use. It is important to point out that the installation of seals must not leave dead corners, must take into account the requirements of national and international installation regulations. However, because these provisions are not necessarily very clear and detailed, it will also increase the difficulty of sealing selection.
Despite the limitations, there are still many manufacturers producing seals required by the pharmaceutical industry. Especially in the last year, several new varieties have appeared on the market. Although most of these products are made of expanded PTFE material, the price of its raw materials is relatively expensive, but because of their good inert performance, so it is very favored by users.
Although expanded PTFE belongs to the plastic/thermoplastic category, it is not like most other thermoplastics, need to use the pouring process and mold production, but is first extruded, sintered, and then cut and processed into shape. Because there is no mold cost, so in the case of less processing volume, it can also be used to process special varieties of PTFE, the economic benefits are significant.
